Religion

Last weekend, I was witness to a Confirmation. Yet, this was not a typical confirmation, at least not for me, as it was neither Christian nor Catholic. Instead it was a Jewish Confirmation. Being brought up a Jew, I had the privilege to have a Bar Mitzvah, but never had I heard of a Jewish Confirmation. As this was a surprise to me, I thought I would share what I learned from this experience.

What is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah?

First of all, most Jews, upon turning 13 years old, have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, depending on your sex. A Bar Mitzvah is for boys turning into men and a Bat Mitzvah is for girls turning into women. Literally the translation of Bar/Bat Mitzvah is “son/daughter of the commandment”. As is tradition within Judaism, the ripe old age of 13 is considered the maturing age for young boys and girls into adulthood. (I am sure this was due to the shorter life span 3000 years ago). The Bar/Bat Mitzvah is an age old custom/rite for the religion, where the youngster holds services in a synagogue. After a year of training and reading ancient Hebrew text, the boy or girl not only leads a congregation on a Saturday morning with song and reading, but also reads aloud from the Torah, the Old Testament. Following the Bar/Bat Mitzvah there is a giant celebration where food, dance (see video below), and drink are involved. On top of all this, a vast amount of money is given to the recent Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

What is the Torah Anyway?

Basically the Torah is the Old Testament written in ancient Hebrew. The Torah includes 5 books (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy). The Torah is written in fanciful Hebrew calligraphy, usually on some animal’s skin, in a scroll form. As the reader, you are never allowed to touch the pages in the Torah for they are deemed too Holy for your touch and the acid from your skin might distort the words on the page. Instead the reader uses a pointer, a Yad, to follow from word to word during the reading. These 5 scrolls are located in the most sacred place inside the synagogue, this is called the Ark. (yes, the Ark of the Covenant). Not only does the Torah contain the Old Testament, but it also contains Jewish law. Hence, when a boy or girl receives his or her Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the child is considered an adult for they have now been ingrained with Jewish law.

What is A Jewish Confirmation?

Upon having a Bar/Bat Mitzvah and reading from the Torah, the young adult has the option of staying in Hebrew school or just walking away. I opted for walking away, as I did not see the reason to stay in religious school. However, my little cousin decided to stay in Hebrew school and a week ago she graduated. Basically a Jewish Confirmation is a celebration of the young adult Jew finishing his/her Hebrew studies. This event is, typically, celebrated on the anniversary of Moses descending from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments, 5768 years ago. As per the Rabbi, this past Sunday was the anniversary to the day of this event.

Nevertheless, on this day there were about twenty 16 year olds that were being confirmed. As I said earlier, this whole event was new to me and I was even more shocked when I entered the synagogue to see all these kids wearing white robes. For a second, I thought that I had been duped into going to a mass baptism or something like that. In all of my years of going to synagogue, I have never seen such a scene. Usually, you see people in dark clothes wearing a Yamaka, a round hat that sits on your head, and a Tallis, a decorative scarf that signifies receiving your Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Naturally the service was painstakingly slow with the Rabbi’s sermon, the usual readings and songs, and the handing out of diplomas. But there was one thing that the Rabbi did that really caught my attention. As he was blessing the recent Confirmands, he waved his hand over them and made the “Vulcan gesture“. Without hesitation I thought this was funny and said something to my mother, who immediately replied that the gesture had been used for thousands of years by Jewish priests.

All in all, while I despise being dragged into synagogue and services, this last experience was interesting to say the least for I learned that Jews have Confirmations too.

Life means many things to many different people. Life, to me for instance, is defined as any organic molecular structure containing DNA with the means to produce similar organic molecular structures. I acknowledge that there are numerous other definitions, one of which may resonate with your personal beliefs more than the definition I have offered.

Suppose, for the sake of this discussion, that you agree with this basic definition, which assumes your belief in chemistry. A human being is created from two reproductive cells each containing one half of the DNA in each non-reproductive human cell. From this union an entire human body is produced. This process is similar in many organisms.

Embryo

In a more simplistic sense, but very much analogous way, single-celled organisms reproduce either sexually (a process basically the same as the human example above) or asexually. Asexual reproduction involves the DNA of the cell replicating itself, with the help of various enzymes (protein molecules). The cell then buds off a portion of its cell membrane and contents along with the duplicate set of DNA, thus creating a new cell in the likeness of the original.

DNA is a tricky molecule. It has the molecular coding to produce protein structures; which in turn, are sent orders and materials (energy and molecules) from the DNA to produce other structures. All of these structures have a function and a set of assembly and installation instructions to ensure they are placed in the proper location to perform their function. DNA is the central organic molecule that brings order to the surrounding environment to create life.

This is why DNA is the root of all life and why, as a compound, it is so special. From where did it come? DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is a combination of building blocks called nucleotides. Nucleotides are comprised of three parts: a phosphate group, a sugar group and one of four types of nitrogen bases. These three things are made up of Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Phosphorous atoms. Nucleotide formation is a natural chemical reaction when these atoms are present in the same time, place and given a set of proper environmental conditions.

DNA

These atoms were produced in a cosmic explosion billions of years ago when a giant conglomeration of blazing gas expelled its contents into the universe in a glorious death cry. This process occurs fairly frequently when looking at the aggregate universe even though each individual Supernova may occur after several billions of years of life for the star. Is it statistically impossible that somewhere else in the universe these atoms were joined in a similar set of environmental conditions, and produced nucleotides and so on to DNA?

I am no statistician, but I think it is actually a likelihood that DNA has been produced somewhere other than this lonely rock planet orbiting a middle-aged, inglorious star on the outskirts of the suburbs in an ordinary spiral galaxy amongst the incomprehensible vastness of the universe.

Fear not, believers in Intelligent Design, for there is a place for your beliefs in this exploration. Recently there have been some noble attempts and excellent theories postulated about the creation of the universe and the basic properties of its materials; however, none of these theories have yet to be, or even are on the horizon of being, proven through scientific observation. Thus, the set of conditions and properties of the universe which led to the creation of all that we see is still a mystery. And, given the fact that incredibly minute deviations in the properties of subatomic particles would lead to a universe that contained no matter or interaction between particles, I would say that there was a great degree of precision imbued upon the fundamental set of building blocks.

Fifteen hundred years have passed – enough time for several Crusades, the Inquisition and the Fall of the Papal StatesNow the Catholic Church stands at a crossroads, opting to revise itself. CNN.com reported this evening that Apostolic Penitentiary is prepared to update its legendary seven deadly sins to adequately address more applicable circumstances of our modern era.

The New Mortal Sins

  1. Pollution
  2. Genetic engineering
  3. Drug dealing
  4. Abortion
  5. Pedophilia
  6. Social injustice
  7. Extreme wealth

Normally in my discussions of all things Catholic I might take some obligatory cheap shots at the Church to which I belong.  This time, I must refrain (boo!!!). I actually want to take an opportunity to applaud the progressiveness of the Church, if you can even say that in the same sentence (see I couldn’t help myself). Their willingness to recognize and adapt to changing conditions can only serve their cause as the papacy aims to reconnect with its flock.

Secondly, this is a pretty solid list – sure there is nothing ground breaking here but it’s a start. Items 2 and 3 are certainly controversial and wide open for debate, but I think few can really argue with the other five. The Church is recognizing hubris and self worship as the root of all mortal sins and now has a written account of their devilish manifestations in a compact ordered list.  Let’s go shopping! While redundant and obvious to some, let’s face many … many people need a written invitation to go along with their spoon fed food.

I am writing this on March. 6th, 1429 AH.

It’s been 1, 428 years since the Prophet received a vision telling him to leave his hometown of Mecca and lead his followers on a pilgrimage to Medina. This crucial event, the Hijra, set up the conditions for Islam to catapult onto the world stage within centuries.

The evolution of Islam from Muhammad to modern day suicide bombers is long and convoluted. The facts presented on traditional Western media sources are often colored by the images of war and conflict.

What is the real story here? Is there any difference between “Radical Islam” and Islam as Muhammad intended?

The Way

Theoretically, there should be no disconnect between Muhammad’s actions and those of his followers. Muslims view reality within the context of the Sunnah, “the Way of the Prophet”, which is basically the sum total of all Muhammad said and did in his lifetime. It should also be noted that Muhammad was adamant about the fact that nothing he said or did was novel, but rather a continuation of the practices begun by Abraham, and forgotten by Abraham’s descendants.

Islamic Law is known as Shariah. The specific laws and injunctions of Shariah have historically been based on four essential sources: The Quran, the Sunnah, the consensus of Islamic scholars (the Ulema), and analytical reasoning. A ruling on Sharia as decided upon by the Ulema, is called a fatwa. In modern times the most controversial fatwa was issued by Osama bin Laden in 1996 AD. This fatwa called for violence against Americans for their involvement in various Muslim countries, and for their support of Israel.

The current phenomenon of Radical Islam and the Western War on Terror, find their source in bin Laden’s fatwa. Now, if the actions demanded by a fatwa are supposed to align with the actions of Muhammad, than surely we should be able to find justification for this fatwa by reviewing Muhammad’s life.

The Life

Muhammad was born in the city of Mecca, in the land of Arabia, in 570 AD. His parents died when he was a child, and so it was his uncle who raised him. At the time, Mecca was the hotspot for trade in Arabia, and Muhammad’s uncle made sure to teach him all the skills he would need to know to be successful. Successful he was, and word quickly spread of his tact and his diplomatic skills. After hearing much about this man, a prestigious businesswoman named Khadijah hired him, and it was only a matter of time before they married. For almost two decades they enjoyed their business, their children, and a peaceful marriage.

Then came the fateful night when, after years of consistent meditation in the same mountain cave, Muhammad was contacted by a supernatural being. This being, which referred to itself as the angel Gabriel, implored Muhammad to listen and to write what it had to say. Muhammad got so freaked out that he immediately ran home to tell Khadijah that he was going crazy. After hearing all the details of the event, Khadijah began to suspect that her husband might actually have had a genuine religious experience. She then convinced him that it would be to his benefit to return to the mountain where he received the revelation, and to prepare himself just in case the angel wanted to speak with him again. Muhammad did just that, and sure enough Gabriel began a conversation that continued until Muhammad’s death.

It was only a matter of time before Muhammad took the angel’s message onto the streets of Mecca. This of course is where the controversy begins. In the center of Mecca was a large black stone, the Kaaba, where travelers from all over Arabia would come to pray to various gods of their liking. One day, Muhammad wandered into this area and began informing everyone that worship of multiple gods was false due to the fact that there was only one God. Although this did not make him very popular, he nonetheless managed to attract followers from the young and the poor.

Over the next ten years Muhammad’s flock grew in size, as did his opposition. Violence against Muslims was becoming more frequent, and several followers were murdered. Muhammad’s patience with the situation finally broke when in 619 AD both his wife and his uncle died from natural causes. Having lost the two most important people in his life, and faced with what seemed an impossible uphill battle in Mecca, Muhammad and his followers emigrated to Medina.

While in Medina, Muhammad commanded his followers to begin ambush attacks on Meccan caravans for food and other supplies. These attacks escalated until the battle of Badr where the Muslims, outnumbered three to one, somehow managed to be victorious against the Meccans. For years armed conflict between the two cities continued. In 628 AD, heeding the orders of the angel Gabriel, Muhammad traveled to Mecca with over a thousand followers to visit the Kaaba. Although they were greeted by armed forces, Muhammad was able to negotiate a deal that stated that the Muslims would be allowed to make the same pilgrimage every year, and that the ongoing conflict should be immediately halted.

This agreement lasted for two years and was broken when Meccans led a surprise raid on Muslim allies. In retaliation Muhammad summoned a force of over ten thousand men to march on Mecca. They conquered the city with little blood shed, and immediately destroyed all the statues and idols at the Kaaba. Due to Mecca’s prominent economic status, this victory effectively brought Arabia under Muhammad’s jurisdiction. Muhammad died from natural causes in 632 AD. Roughly a century after his death, Islam had spread to the Atlantic Ocean and the edge of India.

Jihad

After reviewing Muhammad’s life it becomes obvious that violence was seen as a perfectly acceptable means to an end. Obviously for Muhammad the only end in sight was the spread of Islam, the spread of the angel Gabriel’s message to all people who had not heard it. Muhammad’s faith in the necessity of this future was so strong that by the sheer force of his personality he was able to inspire thousands of followers to risk their life for his message. The speed at which Islam grew in its early years is a testament to Muhammad’s faith, and his followers’ belief in his authenticity.

Fast-forward to 9/11/2001 AD and we are left with the question of whether bin Laden’s fatwa is helping to achieve Muhammad’s main goal. If it is not, than surely bin Laden has altered and adulterated Islam, has created a new religion under the guise of Islam. The key to clarifying this is found in the concept of jihad.

Within the classical Islamic Jurisprudence, jihad is usually taken to mean military exertion against non-Muslim combatants in the defense or expansion of the Islamic state, the ultimate purpose of which is to establish a universal Islamic state. Jihad, the only form of warfare permissible in Islamic law, may be declared against non-Muslims who refuse to convert to Islam or submit to Islamic rule. Jihad is perpetual in nature; in theory, there can be no permanent peace with non-Muslim states, only truces that can be repudiated when circumstances become favorable for the resumption of hostilities. (Wikipedia)

As this definition makes all too clear, early in the history of Islam it was decided that Muhammad’s message would inevitably have to be spread to all corners of the earth. It can be said that the current War on Terror was inevitable – the moment Muhammad decided that violence would be an effective way to spread his message, he also must have known that his followers and their descendants would replicate his actions. But can we blame Muhammad? Was any of this even his decision? He never once admitted to being divine, only a mouthpiece for the divine. In his story we find an ordinary human being stumbling upon something huge that completely sideswiped his destiny, or at least what he thought was his destiny.

When examining the parallels between the struggle of the Middle East with the U.S. and the struggle of Muhammad vs. Mecca, its easy to see how bin Laden concluded that his fatwa was perfectly in line with Islamic tradition - bin Laden has been all too clear about what he perceives as America’s overbearing influence in Muslim countries, whether through economic, military, or cultural means. He’s right, we’re a superpower and in a globalized world this clash of cultures is inevitable.

However, it is my own opinion that if Islam is to survive until 2000 A.H., it needs to completely follow in the footsteps of Muhammad. Yes, Muhammad often reacted with violence to the aggression of the Meccans, but despite it all he had the courage to march on Mecca and negotiate a peace treaty with his enemies, with the people he had labeled idolaters. The definition of jihad as defined above was created after the death of Muhammad, he had no say in it, much like Jesus had no say in the Spanish Inquisition, or the Crusades.

In light of these facts, bin Laden’s fatwa is null and void – it is not absolutely in line with the Sunnah, the deeds of Muhammad. Radical Islam is an adulterated version of Islam. It is a false religion. It’s goal of establishing a global Islamic State via violence has backfired by convincing its enemy that Islam is a religion based on hatred.

A true Muslim, in perfect imitation of Muhammad, would advocate peace in the form of a treaty, and use violence only as a last resort.

Harvard University, the most recognizable institute of higher learning in America and quite possibly the world, announced today that there would be a new program of women-only hours at one of its gymnasiums. This new policy is the result of the complaints of a Muslim student who said she was uncomfortable exercising in front of men for religious purposes. I personally am absolutely disgusted by the conduct of the Harvard administration. For a university such as Harvard to cater to the demands of a religion that oppresses more women than any other worldwide in order to satisfy the complaints of one student is a textbook example of political correctness run amok.

Would Harvard grant a similar request for other students? Would they ban the serving of pork products for Jews? Would they not serve meat on Good Friday? No, of course not. This is an ever increasing trend in American colleges of bending to any and all demands made by the single most violent, intolerant, and of course the single most chauvinistic religion in the world. Now the men of Harvard are forced to pay the price as they are discriminated against based on the gender bias of another’s religion.

I would expect such behavior from Columbia University or the city government of San Francisco, but not Harvard.

To all those who still lend an ear to the voice of reason I would ask that you let the Harvard administration know you are sick and tired of having the religious beliefs of the violent and oppressive minority interfere with your daily lives.
