I think your points about the Civil War are exceptionally valid. I'd say it is pretty certain that the fresco's 1865 commission was no coincidence in that regard. Also, to your point about Washington being a native Virginian, perhaps painting also served as an olive branch of sorts to the south; a reminder that they too are still very much a part of the Union.

As far as conspiracy theories, let's have it! I love them as much as anyone and this thread as an appropriate place as any for those discussions.

Hmmmm...very interesting. At first glance I would automatically assume that there's some secret meaning and maybe a hidden treasure, but I just finished reading The Templar Legacy and Angels and Demons so I'm going to wait for more comments before going down that road. :P

My less conspiracy-oriented opinion is that it's really just a very powerful allegory. The Civil War had just ended in favor of the Union which George Washington had devoted his entire life to. The survival of the Union guaranteed George Washington's immortality. If the Union had been destroyed, would we really still hold Washington in such high regard, especially considering that he was from Virginia, which would be a foreign country? As for the choice of using Greco-Roman deities, they'd be the most recognizable and there aren't enough Christian gods to represent those things. Also, this would make it less blasphemous as George Washington sitting at the right hand of God would have surely upset a few people.

That's just my two cents, though...
