Although he was at times overconfident, he was also a pragmatist. Once he recognized a battle he couldn't win, he didn't stick around, unlike Hitler who would gladly throw his own men into the fire. If Hitler had died, I bet there would've been short-term hard fighting but eventually Rommel would've surrendered thus ending the war sooner that Hitler did.
