World Series Time: I’m in a New York State of Mind

Vivid HDR Colors of Times Square

I live in New Jersey, the perpetual battleground for sporting allegiances – and noise pollution. War is waging right now.

With the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees set to do battle tonight, much of Northeast is buzzing with anticipation and indignation.

Friends hating friends, coworkers talking smack at every turn and families drawing enemy lines.

For me the smack talking is a nuisance; a trivial task between ill-informed individuals that have no bearing on the outcome of the real contest. What’s worse, most of the rancor comes from bandwagon fans (at best) who just purchased their (insert successful team) hat last week.

This pisses me off.

As a lifelong Yankee fan I illicit much hate from others and little sympathy from everyone else. My team wins. A lot. But I never take that for granted. I live and die with every pitch and I always respect my opponent – yes, even the Red Sox.

This is why my stomach is in knots right now (roughly six hours before first pitch). I will be an absolute mess until this series is over. The ups and downs will take me on an emotional roller coaster that often times make me act a fool. I cannot help it. I am wired that way.

I will do my best to enjoy the World Series, and I hope you will too. This is a great match-up between to very similar teams. Let’s hope for an epic contest that teeters on driving me over the edge.

I think it would be wise to have paramedics standing by at your house for the duration of the series.

With any luck someone will be there concealing an iPhone to record the rescue attempts on video.

If the Yanks lose, when will it be safe to talk to you again?

Also, I want to live in a world where HDR Times Square exists. It’s a hell of a lot better looking than real life!

We would all do well to live in a John Lennon inspired Candy Land.

Well the latest, is that the Yanks are trading Kennedy, Coke, and the friggin best prospect in their system for Curtis Granderson! Seems like a dubious move to me…but what do I know

      Curtis Grand-dad?

I would much rather that the rumors of the Halladay trade came to fruition than this abomination. Should we be pointing the finger at Cashman for these awful pay-too-much-for-washed-up-players mentality, or is the Steinbrenners?

Guys, sorry but I have to disagree emphatically about this. I absolutely LOVE this trade and Cashman ought to be commended.

Austin Jackson was a nice prospect, no doubt hyped by the New York machine, who will be a nice major leaguer but does not project to be a great. Meanwhile Phil Coke and Ian Kennedy are serviceable big leaguers at best, Kennedy having the better upside.

Granderson is a plus 4 WAR player and will be a massive upgrade over the Melky / Gardner duo in terms of center field value (a premium defensive position).

Do yourselves a favor and read this short but informative article about the deal. Dave Cameron does a far better job explaining it than I can.
