Well, at the very least Massoud warned The EU officially during his address. As far as the US is concerned, we supplied Massoud with weapons and training during the Russian war and it's a good bet our intelligence people were in regular contact with him after the embassy and USS Cole bombings. So I would say the US did have plenty of warning but never imagined that a few guys with box cutters could do so much damage.

Sun Tzu would approve of Massoud as a worthy disciple. Massoud wisely deployed a Go Strategy to deal with the larger and better equipped Soviet Force. Time and time again, speed and carefully chosen battle engagements prove themselves invaluable in warfare, and almost always turn numbers into a disadvantage.

Massoud was also wise in his awareness of intelligence and counter-intelligence. It is just a shame that the United States did not heed his warning. Jack do you know of how exactly Massoud tried to warn the US of a Al Qaeda attack?
