So I got my Google Wave invite yesterday, which is awesome. Unfortunately I have no fellow Wavers to share in my glory, which is definitely NOT awesome.
Initially Google was allowing 8 invitations to be sent out to other users once a person was brought into the Google Wave fold. I was a direct descendant of a first generation invitee. I was excited.
That it took exactly one week for my invitation to be processed had me leery of the adoption rates and had me worried that I may have trouble bringing in the 8 individuals I had planned to invite. Upon firing up Google Wave last night, my fears were confirmed.
I searched around in Help and here’s what I found:
We have a long list of people who have either signed up for an invitation to Google Wave, or who have been nominated by a friend to get a Google Wave account. Unfortunately, we aren’t able to pass out invites as fast as the nomination list has grown, so we’re not currently adding more people to our waiting list.
As soon as we’re confident that the system can accept more users, we will add a wave to your account that allows you to nominate friends and colleagues for an account. Once you have the capability to invite people, the wave appear in your inbox.
Who would have thought being part of the “in crowd” would be so lonely?
Now my problem is obvious: How am I going to get acclimated with Google Wave, a real time communication and collaboration tool, if I have no one to collaborate with?
My foolish hope was that I could get an early jump on on this breakthrough environment so that I could be ahead of the curve. But like all great laid plans, that was for naught. Regardless, I think we can all agree that it is the Freedom Cloud that is to blame for this mess.

That’s about how I feel about Google Wave right now too. I haven’t actually received an invite, but I figure I’m not missing out on much since none of my friends have it yet either.
Once Google Wave goes live for the public, it’s going to be amazing, and will probably change the face of online communication… Until then.. It’s just a novelty.
Surely our invitations are delayed only by a lag in the mail.
