Facebook Lite Has Launched: Another Lolcat is Born

Facebook Lite is the new Twitter; which is the old Facebook that replaced MySpace.

Did you get all that?

Too Many Facebook RequestsEarlier today Facebook showed us that imitation is indeed the greatest form of flattery – again. In a move that is no doubt aimed at Twitter, Facebook Lite has launched offering a stripped down approach to Facebooking.  For those among us who find the allure of the countless Facebook applications mystifiying, annoying and a down right plague upon humanity, Diet Facebook offers an alternative.

Within the friendly confines of Facebook Lite, users can easily access a stripped down version of their friends’ status, updates and profiles. For Twitter users the surroundings will seem eerily familiar: a single content area of continuous updates flanked by a tidy right sidebar with minimal yet useful information.

The Twitterization of Facebook Lite does not stop there however, as it was also announced today that Facebook will begin rolling out @mentions for status updates. Just as with Twitter, the mentions will allow users to tag their friends with the now famous @ symbol. As this enhancement rolls out, users can easily direct messages to their friends with virtual impunity.

What now for the social rivals?

With this very obvious offensive targeted at Twitter will there be a reaction or counteroffensive to Facebook’s measures? While Twitter has the momuntum and tremendouse free press, Facebook has the community – over 200 million strong. In one day Facebook just brought Twitter to the world.
