The Fool is the journeyman, ever traveling onward to new adventure. Many horizons has he walked, ancient is his step. His lust for experience propels him onward. He appears as though in awe of the world. There is not a trace of boredom or familiarity on his face. Looking up at the sky in wonder, he seems not to notice or care about the oncoming precipice he may soon be falling over. A dog follows behind, mimicking the Fool, almost leaping over the cliff’s edge while looking at the sky.
The symbolism in this card is used to suggest that the world is best seen from the eyes of a child. While time tends to cloud our childhood sense of magic and mystery, that old feeling is always just around the corner, lying dormant in our memories.
In a tarot spread the Fool represents experiences in your life that make you feel young and new again. However, the Fool can also negatively represent a period of time where one feels old, bored and apathetic about life.

“Nobody seems to notice the fool on the hill.”
Andrew,
Which tarot card deck is the best to learn on? I imagine it’s the one you show above, what is the name of that deck?
I use Rider-Waite Tarot Cards. They are the most commonly used of all cards, and you’ll recognize a lot of the imagery when you look through a deck for the first time: Card #9, “The Hermit”, is the insleeve album art for Led Zeppelin’s 4. It makes it easier to do tarot when the images are already ingrained in peoples heads.
