Facebook Vanity URLs are Now Live: Get Yours Today

As of 12:01 this morning Facebook is allowing the unique selection of usernames for the entire Facebook community. Holy shit stains Batman I can’t believe this is happening.

So you may be asking yourself, who the hell gives a crap? Well no one really, but this is a change that Facebook members ought to be aware of because…

It is worth knowing that any and all usernames and their corresponding vanity URLs must be unique. As with Highlander there can be only one greg.molyneux in the Facebook world and I already staked my claim. For those of you with very common names do not delay if you are looking to maintain a semblance of your real name as part of your new username. To that end, these names will be going fast as Facebook’s 200 million-plus user base will be getting on board with a frightening techno fervor.

Your Facebook username has been set

Of course, you may choose to go into an entirely new direction and get creative with your username. Possibly selecting TK421 with whimsical hopes that people will be asking ‘why aren’t you at your post?’ However, be advised that once your name is selected it CANNOT be changed. So while at the age of 16 the selection of LadiesMan217 may have seemed like a good idea, it will undoubtedly make you feel like a douche later in life.

So, gone are the days of using this mess (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=544415777&ref=name) to direct people to my Facebook profile. Now I can use (http://www.facebook.com/greg.molyneux) as my sleek and sexy but no so eco-friendly vanity URL. As you can see it is much easier to remember, more user-specific, and of course more search engine friendly than a generic numerical ID.

Oh, and if you’re worried about figuring out how to make the changes to you username, fear not as Facebook will walk you through the entire process. The application is going to prompt you to make the changes the next time you sign in.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I must go listen to Carly Simon’s “You’re so Vain” while warding off people who hate Facebook.
