B Movie Babels: Big Trouble in Little China

“You know what old Jack Burton always says?”

The comical martial arts flick Big Trouble in Little China starring Jurt Russell as Jack Burton.Well if you don’t then you need to stop what your doing and watch Big Trouble in Little China.

Jack Burton was your everyday loud mouth jackass. That is until he drove his truck straight into a war that has been secretly raging for ages. Lo Pan, a long dead wizard, seeks to regain his human form. All he needs is a girl with green eyes to marry. Why not Kim Cattrall?

With his tiny but ferocious partner Wang, Jack must now fight his way through the bowels of San Francisco  in search of the damsel in distress and, more importantly, his truck. Why not throw in a little Chinese Yoda played by the lazy eyed Victor Wong (you might remember him as Walter from Tremors)?

All along the way, Jack must avoid falling into the Hell of Boiling Oil (“the Chinese have alot of hells”) and dodge falling rocks that may or may not be his own doing.  His impression of a door to door salesmen with taped glasses will crack you up almost as much as his new found optimism after drinking the mysterious Chinese Tea.

But the movie is still missing something. What it needs now is complete rip off of Raiden, an angry exploding head, and a hairy limping monster that doesn’t quite fit the storyline, and of course a little floating head with tentacles.

Be sure to add Big Trouble in Little China to your DVD collection or at the very least, wait another three days until TNT shows it again.

Final Score: BBBB
Four out of Five B’s

Clever dialogue, plenty of martial arts, and every single one of Kurt Russel’s lines earn this movie high marks.

One of my favorite B Movies. I have owned this on VHS and now on DVD and will probably eventually end up with it on BLU Ray.

This one is an all time favorite of mine. I have very clear memories of watching this on HBO over and over again back in the late ’80s. This one is no doubt a top notch ‘good-bad’ movie. To that end, I’d award it 4.5 Babeled B’s.

It couldn’t rip off Raiden, because Mortal Kombat came AFTER Big Trouble. In fact, I think MK ripped off a few character designs from the Storms in BTILC.

      Bravo, Nightwind! I stand corrected.

“Big Trouble in Little China” is a really enjoyable old “bad” movie. Jack Gamble – Man Overboard, might consider watching “Overboard” with Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn. It is one of those that gets better each time you watch it.
