What’s In Your Reader? New York Yankees Edition

The LoHud Yankees Blog

The ultimate in New York Yankees blogs – Peter Abraham’s LoHud Yankees blog. Pete has been working the New York Yankees beat for The Journal News since 2006. Despite being one of the lesser known papers covering the Yankees, no one writer comes close to covering the team as completely as Pete. Abraham is a social media maven, making great use of the WordPress platform, Facebook blog network, and the social media darling, Twitter. Never wanting of content, Pete posts to his blog frequently; averaging 6.1 posts per day over the last 30 days (as per Google Reader).

With all the techno babble aside, Pete’s insight and objectivity are much needed in the oft unbalanced Yankee Universe. Pete is not one to hold back when it comes to putting the hyper-sensitive, doom and gloom Yankee fans in their place. Even as a New England native, who idolized the great beat writers of the Boston Globe (I’m talking about you Peter Gammons), Pete does his best to report the inner-workings of the team in a way that traditional papers are unable to replicate.  Pete’s only flaw: his obsession with Bruce Springsteen.

Blogging the Bombers

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News has a great little thing going with his Blogging the Bombers blog. Mark is one of the few non-hack writers with actual journalistic integrity left at the Daily News. I have been a fan of Mark’s since he was covering the Yankees for mlb.com. Mark is a San Francisco Giants fan who brings baseball intelligence and realism to his writing. Mark always gets to the point and is an excellent daily resource for any and all Yankee related news.

Pinstriped Bible

DISCLAIMER: Steven Goldman’s Pinstriped Bible is NOT for the faint of heart.

Yankee fans that do not possess a tolerance for objectivity or a desire to learn the scientific nuance that is driving the modern evolution of baseball, do yourself a favor and stop reading now. Steven Goldman is a lifelong Yankees fan and writer for Baseball Prospectus. What does this mean? It means he is a s number crunching guru, and that he is not bashful about picking apart any and all Yankee related deficiencies.  Ever the pragmatist, not even Derek Jeter and his suspect defense are off limits to Goldman’s statistical scrutiny.

For fans that want to take a deeper look into how statistics now rule the game, why VORP matters, why On-base Percentage is the mother of all offensive statistics, and what Zone Rating really means; then you have to add Pinstriped Bible to your RSS reader. With the aid of mathematical simulations run a million times over, Steven can lay out the odds in a unique and eye opening way. While I still believe you can never fully replace a scout’s eye, it is hard to argue the revolutionary impact that sabermetrics is having on the game today.
