Today I read a tweet about a new application to hit the Twittersphere a few days ago. It’s called TwitterGetter and it has already stirred up quite a bit of controversy among Twitterers.
Here’s how it works:
- You read a Tweet from me telling you about this great new tool.
- The link takes you to the main page where you enter your name and password in order to retweet the message.
- This automatically sets you to follow the previous six people on the list of TweeterGetters (including me and five others).
- Anyone who clicks on your retweet will go to the same link. This time they will automatically follow you first, me second, and four others.
- The process continues and suddenly your followers are going viral. The site boasts that in 30 days you may see as many as 20,000 new followers!
So what do people think?
Of course, many fans of Twitter are already up in arms over TweeterGetter. An article over at BlogStorm calls it a pyramid scheme and suggests the application will crash the popular social networking site. Over at AmnesiaBlog they site some pretty convincing statistics suggesting that the application is overrated and will not produce the advertised results. Many, including some of the most popular Twitterers, feel that this is a shortcut and defeats the purpose of getting to know others on Twitter.
Regardless, I was a total sucker for the prospect of thousands of new followers on Twitter. Will I become a social media powerhouse or will I be an acompliss to the worst fad since the Pet Rock? Only time will tell. In the meantime, feel free to share your thoughts or experiences in the comments section below.

This just sounds like unethical, spammy, get rich or die trying internet behavior.
For me personally I would be very annoyed if I was led to a page, asked to sign into something with my twitter account credentials, and was automatically then retweeting an article and following new people.
This is definitely not for me, this seems dubious at best.
About 10 hours into it and I have 11 new followers so far. Including (drumroll)…MC Hammer. It has been a strange day to say the least.
Check this out, it appears Twitter is cracking down on programs that try to game the system.
