Whoever Didn’t Hate the Yankees Before Has Just Been Converted

The New York Yankees are now officially worse than the Dallas Cowboys.

Reports are running rampant that Mark Teixeira has come to terms with the New York Yankees on an eight-year deal worth roughly $180 million. Just let this excerpt from ESPN.com wash over your for a second.

The contract would pay Teixeira an average of $22.5 million per season. New York has spent more than $400 million in salary in the last month, with $161 million going to left-handed pitcher CC Sabathia in a seven-year deal and $82.5 million on right-hander A.J. Burnett for five years.

Teixeira’s salary also lifts the Yankees into a league of their own class; they would [have] the four highest-paid players in Major League Baseball, including third baseman Alex Rodriguez, shortstop Derek Jeter and Sabathia.

That’s right folks, the Yankees will have the four highest-paid players in baseball, hell they will pretty much have the four highest-paid athletes in all of professional sports. Four athletes that will make more than most other baseball teams combined!

Last month I babeled on my thoughts regarding the Yankees and the potential moves they could make during this free agent class. Never in my wildest dreams did I foresee them signing the top three players of a very strong free agent market. The Yankees effectively plucked the two top starting pitchers available and followed that up by stealthy plucking the best everyday player available in Mark Teixeira. You have to give Brian Cashman credit for flexing the muscle that his position as Yankee General Manager affords him.

If this isn’t the best team that money can buy, then I don’t know what is. Still as a lifelong Yankee fan I cannot help but have mixed emotions. This team has monopolized the market during an economic downturn and bolstered their roster for years to come, while other teams are struggling to conserve. Sure they had $90 million come off the payroll this year and they are moving into a brand new stadium that will see their already gaudy revenue numbers skyrocket.

Something just isn’t right about cannibalizing the entire market to the point that Jerry Jones looks like a pauper. After all, why sign just one free agent when you can have all three? Besides, let’s not forget that Manny still needs a home.

Note: The quote from ESPN above has been continually changing throughout the afternoon as they update their report and finalize the contract figures.

Well you know what Socrates said, “Don’t hate the player hate the game.” I think it was him. When you don’t have a salary cap the rich get richer. I’m glad we are getting richer. Hopefully this time karma doesn’t “F” with us like it did with Carl Pavano.

Ah yes Carl Pavano, the American Idle himself. Long will be remembered the Carla Pavano era in the Bronx.

Rumor has it he drove by a little league baseball field covered with snow and tore his rotator cuff. He is out of beer league softball for the year.
