Favre and the Jets

J-E-T-S: Jets, Jets, Jets!  Somebody make it stop!  Sadly, those chants will be louder than ever after today’s edict of false hope was bestowed upon a beleaguered franchise.  Brett Favre, lord and savior, is now a New York Jet. Can you believe it?  Sadly it’s true and it looks like Jason Morgan’s wish was a total failure.

It is a shame that an all-time greats of the National Football League will finish out the twilight of his career in a uniform that does not bleed nearly as pure as Packer Green.  I’m not even going to touch upon the melodrama that unfolded between Favre (the King of indecision) and the Packer organization, but isn’t it going to be awful to see a player of his caliber and importance in another uniform?

Situations like this represent all that is wrong with sports.  When players like Jerry Rice, Michael Jordan, Willie Mays, Joe Montana put on another uniform it is sad and unfortunate.  Granted more often than not the player is always of diminished skills and just cannot let go of the game.  Nevertheless, there is something to be said for an organizational mainstay to live out his entire career with one team.  Where is the pride of legacy?

Now we all have the joy of watching Packer great Brett Favre in an impostor uniform; playing for New York’s other team.  Of course this will not stop Jet fans from thinking this is their year.  I just hope that after Favre embarrassed himself this off-season he does not resort to wearing pantyhose and fur coats like the Jets other legendary Quarterback.

Update: Whoops!  This is going to be interesting for the marketing folks at Electronic Arts.  As a sendoff for the legendary quarterback, Brett Favre is set to appear on the 2009 cover wearing his Packer Uniform.  So much for that!  The game is set to ship to retail stores in August.  Will they update the cover?

Either way, this further magnifies the embarrassment and awkwardness of the entire situation.  Personally, I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw this.

Indeed, all of my hopes and dreams were crushed when I first heard of the recent Favre tumult. Now he is a Jet, proud day for him.

Shame on Favre for his indecision and shame on the Packers for their lack of loyalty. Both were wrong and all are punished!

And just wait until the New York Media hype machine really gets rolling.

My dad is a life-long Packers fan, which has of course passed on to my brother. I find myself grateful that I’m several states away from them today as I’m sure their reaction to the news was less than pleasant.

While I could care less about football for the most part, I lost a lot of respect for Favre in the midst of this whole situation — it just got a little too ridiculous.

There’s no question Favre’s ego got in the way of his better judgment, and it appears many people have lost respect for Brett. At face value he always appeared to be a stand-up team first guy. Clearly that is not 100% the case.

Unless he goes to the Jets and has two or more very productive seasons this entire fiasco will turn into an enormous black market on his otherwise towering career resume. Which will lead of course to massive regret in the end. Sarah, I can only imagine how Packer fans feel about this.

This is the exact reason why I decided to stop being a Jets fan following their asinine blunders with Santana Moss and Laveranues Coles. Now the JETS are cutting Pennington and guess where he is rumored to go? The Dolphins. Thats right, it is extremely clear that these two teams will continue to embarrass themselves and suck for a long time.

Pennington reunited with the Big Tuna eh? While Chad is certainly not the answer long term, you cannot question Parcells ability to turn around an organization and then leave.

That said, Chad defecting to an AFC East rival can only help the Dolphins game planning in their two games per season that they play against the Jets.

But honestly, with the Patriots as top dogs does any of this even matter anyway?

That is so friggin great that Favre will be on the Madden 2009 cover wearing a Packers uniform. Priceless.

Isn’t that spot on the cover taboo and always results in an injury or badness for that player? Or is that the EA MLB 2K(X) spot?

I wonder if this cover will be worth something. Id buy a copy and keep it sealed…ya never know!

Jon, you are totally correct. The Madden Curse is infamous. Year in and year out the player appearing on the cover has an awful year or gets a season ending injury. It is the kiss of death in that respect.

Perhaps this reverses the curse since he isn’t even on that team1

The Madden Curse has haunted the NFL since 2000 when Barry Sanders appeared on the back of the game, but did not play a single game that year. It follows:

    2000: Barry Sanders
    2001: Eddie George – didn’t crack 1000 yards
    2002: Daunte Culpepper – missed 4 games
2003: Marshal Faulk – worst season since ‘96
    2004: Michael Vick – missed 11 games
2005: Ray Lewis – impervious to the curse
2006: Donavon McNabb – went down in week 9
    2007: Shaun Alexander – missed 6 games
2008: Vince Young – not the greatest year
    2009: Bret Favre – hahaha

And keep in mind, Ray Lewis has the same wallet as Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) in Pulp Fiction.

It is going to be interesting to see how this trade effects the Madden curse as this has never happened having the cover player traded to a new team and the cover has him in his old jersey. It could be just the thing that breaks the curse.

My little brother is a huge Jets fan. He bought a Gholston Jersey as soon as they were available.

He and have the same thoughts on this. You just put one of the greatest QBs of all time in the same division with Tom Brady the most overrated QB of all time. The Jets Pats games are going to set viewer records to see these 2 face off.

As far as what this really does for the Jets, look at it this way. Favre can make any thow on the filed. Pennington limited the offense with a lack of arm stregnth so defenses could play up and were better able to play the run against them. Now defenses have to worry about the deep ball and will have to play off opening up the running game. I would keep an eye on Thomas Jones for a number fantasy back and Leon Washington as a number 3 but don’t draft both.

Lewis got injured his year and missed a game and Young missed a couple games last year.

Favre has never missed a single game if he does I say the curse lives. If not I think it may be broken, for this year anyway.

You really think Tom Brady is the most overrated QB of all time?

  15. Posted August 8, 2008 at 6:37 pm | Permalink

    Hell yes I do!

If there is one thing the Giants proved beyond a shadow of a doubt is that if you put pressure on Brady and smack him in the mouth he folds. However if you smack Brett Favre in the mouth he pops up and then wins the game by 2 or more touchdowns. Brady can’t hold Favre’s jock strap.

  16. Posted August 8, 2008 at 6:42 pm | Permalink

There is no question, especially when you account for the consecutive games played streak, that Brett Favre is as tough as nails. Still, I admire the football and model shagging ability of Tom Brady.

  17. Posted August 8, 2008 at 7:26 pm | Permalink

I have to agree with The Movie Whore. I too think that Brady is overrated. Don’t get me wrong, I do think he’s a very good quarterback (which he proved in last years stats), but he would not be a champion if it weren’t for Bellichek.

  18. Posted August 9, 2008 at 7:22 pm | Permalink

No Brady is a decent QB that has one of the best. O lines in football. If Jon Kitna had the time to get rid of the ball that Brady does they would be heralding him as a great QB.

  19. Posted August 10, 2008 at 1:54 pm | Permalink

Kitna does have the goods as far as the laser rocket arm is concerned. He can make all the throws. Unfortunately the the Detroit Lions front office is a shame and he will never have a team properly built around him.

In unrelated QB discussion I really think Carson Palmer is an outstanding QB.

  20. Posted August 11, 2008 at 4:51 pm | Permalink

Carson Palmer has his moments but Peyton is the king right now. He is not only the QB but also doubles as the O coordinator, at least he thinks he does.

  21. Posted August 11, 2008 at 4:54 pm | Permalink

Well Peyton belongs in a separate category.
