Every now and then probability strikes with a vengeance.
Someone gets struck by lightning. Someone gets attacked by a shark. A major airliner crashes into the ocean. An asteroid strikes the planet leading to the destruction of entire species. A man becomes pregnant. For the majority of us observers, these events will only be experienced as fears – their reality secretly called into question by their lack of appearance in our lives. And yet there they remain, always a possibility.
Today I became a statistic.
While I can’t brag about surviving a lightning strike, or about fending off a shark with my bare hands, I can tell you that I was just informed that an entire eight-hour recording session I paid for was randomly deleted during a back-up process. I was in complete shock until I found out from the studio manager that this only occurs “one and a million” times. Once I learned this, and was informed that my money would be refunded 100%, I regained the ability to laugh at the twists of Fate. I mean, who would have ever thought I’d be that one in a million?
In light of these events, I am now interested in hearing from everyone else who has found themselves randomly in the hands of fate – destined to become a statistic for a day.
OK, story time begins…now.

You went to MetroMusic didn’t you?
Why? Does that place have reputation for messing stuff up?
I was there a few times about 8 years ago. I didn’t need to make it through the front door to realize it was a Z class operation at best.
I won’t mention the name of the studio, only because the actual recording came out awesome and sounding like anything you’d buy in a store. The place doesn’t really deserve me slandering their name across the internet.
Fair enough, although I would say that since they could not manage to have a back-up of your recording (a task that a blind 7 year old could handle) I would say this studio deserves to have it be known over the Internet.
Well the weird part is that the recording supposedly was destroyed in the process of backing up the recording? Huh? I don’t get it.
Ok. It was MetroMusic. But the actual recording came out awesome, and the equipment, mics, and the rest of the set up were all top of the line.
I guess one of the advantages of recording on analog tape over digital is that you don’t have to worry about the computer crashing or pulling some random crap.
That is bizarre. Without knowing exactly how they back-up their stuff, but they should be using a RAID setup. This automatically duplicates the information onto two hard drives.
This is a bummer, there is always a chance of mistakes happening – it stink that it happened to Sebastian Davis.
Are they going to let you guys go back down there and record again for free?
Well, here is the first story,Anrew:
While I was not “one in a million” my twin sister was the lucky one.
She crossed the street a mili-second before an explosive belt carried out by a suicide bomber in 2004, in the city of Kfar Saba, Israel, blow up the whole bus station she was waiting on.
One perosn got killed; While she got only few burns in her upper body and her shirt; chocking from smoke, she stood there completly wondering; Whatwas attracting me in the other side?
Crazy!
Oren, Thats insane! Your sister is seriously lucky to be alive. In a similar vein, my sister-in-law, who rarely showed up late for work, slept threw her alarm on 9/11/01. If she had gotten up the usual time she would have been scheduled to be at the train station under the world trade center when the planes hit. There are a lot of stories like that.
Greg, no I’m never doing business with them again. All my bandmates live in northern jersey, so we’re just gonna find a place closer to here. And I’ll bring up what you said about RAID so I don’t have to deal with this again.
Jeff Ruemeli will tell you all about MetroMusic. He used to jam there quite often. I used to tag along to watch.
What about getting in your car and starting to drive to a concert, realizing you had forgotten the tickets you head home to find that they are not there…
I guess I threw them out by mistake? Either way, it sucked.
That sucks Jay.
Check out this amazing full court basketball shot that helped a high school team win their game by 1 point.
This has got to be so completely against the odds of ever happening.
