Kidd Chris is Philadelphia Talk Radio
Posted by Greg Molyneux under Entertainment
Update: Kidd Chris has since been fired for airing a racial song parody on 94.1 WYSP. Read this article for more details regarding his unforeseen departure.
I’m a sucker for talk radio, especially when it’s really crude and immature. There is nothing high-brow or respectable about the shock-jockery I willingly expose myself to on a daily basis. I think of it as modern day blood-letting for the soul. For me, base humor and fart jokes are fundamental to my brief departures from my cold harsh reality of life in cubicle. My talk radio existence began with Howard Stern and has since migrated to his anointed protégé Kidd Chris.
Chris Foley, 33, has bounced around a bit during his short albeit controversial radio career. Moving along from Syracuse, Kansas, Sacramento, and San Antonio before finally landing in Philadelphia. Initially he was an afternoon jock on 94.1 WYSP, occupying the 3-7 afternoon drive and serving as my personal salvation during an hour and twenty minute commute home. However, once the station reformatted and completely dismantled its air-staff, Kidd Chris slid into the coveted and lucrative morning slot to take on the very popular Preston and Steve show (which has been number one in Philly since Stern fled to Sirius).
On occasion I would tune into Preston & Steve’s show on 93.3 WMMR during my morning ride, however their morning zoo antics were too much stomach. The format was too cookie cutter and the bits were altogether hacky. Steve is a pretty funny dude, but the rest of their crew makes me want to gouge my heart out with a spoon because it will hurt more you twit. But with Kidd Chris now soiling the morning airwaves, I no longer have to subject myself to Philly’s morning zoo. Gadzooks!
Over the next year I am eager to see what kind of dent the Kidd Chris show can put into the iron sides of the Preston & Steve behemoth. I am fairly confident there will be a shift in power. Kidd Chris is more of the Philly mode. Philadelphia is a tough town with a bunch of championship deprived jerk-offs, and that is the exact audience that Chris Foley targets. His show is built on call-in audience participation by angry dudes who can’t get chicks. All parties are fair game (including the host) and everyone’s ego gets crushed, after all the show is predicated on building up so they can tear it down.
I love listening to this train wreck every morning.

June 2nd, 2008 at 9:31 pm[...] in to work this morning, on a dreary Friday, I did not have the usual comfort of Kidd Chris. Instead 94.1 WYSP was playing a garbled mess of best-of material and and 90s rock music. When the [...]

The video is great! I don’t listen to Kidd Chris and don’t really like talk radio, but that was funny.

Yeah crank calls are a Kidd Chris staple. Another classic is when he calls Mark Hamill.

thanks for posting this stuff on your website. especially the prank call clips. i surely don’t fit the average kidd chris fan profile. black, female, 42, highly educated. but here’s why i listen…one - some of kidd’s stuff really is funny, two - cobra is an equal opportunity jokester. three - i thought he landed some really good interviews over the years.
QUESTION — why is it that everyone gets up in arms when something is about blacks, but it was very ok for the “thomas the fat jap” jokes, or things about connie and “retards” or the slew of homo or fag jokes and parodies.
i’m more like the aclu…if it’s good for one, then it’s good for all. and if not, then silence everyone. but getting up in arms WAY after the fact for things that ‘ysp clearly endorsed when their advertisers were lining up to be in this daypart, well, that’s hypocrisy at its best. the mere fact that ‘ysp moved chris and co to the a.m. drive was a dead give-away that they didn’t know much about what would really work for him anyway. sure people gravitated to listen in a.m. drive, but he sure didn’t have the same appeal…. a.m. drive is a bit stuffy. no matter. i’m sure he’ll land somewhere with his crew. ‘ysp rocks…..in their own ears — because no one else is listening!
