Rites of Spring
Posted by Greg Molyneux under Photography, Sports

It is the subtle reminders of spring that bring a smile to my otherwise sullen visage. However, it is not only the prospect of better weather that piques my interest. Instead the budding of life reminds me yet again it is time for one thing alone. Baseball. Here I sit in Germany anxiously awaiting the final Opening Day at Yankee Stadium. Despite the fact that I cannot watch the game on TV I can barely contain my excitement. To say I love baseball and the Yankees would be a gross understatement. The gravity I bring to the game has mercilessly sucked all of my friends into a state of de facto fan-hood. So allow me to apologize beforehand as I will no doubt inundate this very blog to babel on quite frequently about the state of the Yankees. Cheers to a great season.

It would have to be the Yankees. The most loved by their fans and the most hated by the rest of the world. Sir while I respect your right to be a fan of any team you so choose, the rest of us reserve the right to to unanimously cry out “Why God Why”
Just messing with you my good man. I have no room to talk as I am a rabid Raiders fan. Other than soccer fans in Europe, we are the the most psychotic fans as we are fanatical about being Raiders fans.

I get like that about hockey and the Devils every October, and was especially obnoxious this year as the team moved into the Rock, so I understand your excitement.
Where are the Yankees moving to, anyway?

I’m curious, does Germany have a favorite sport besides soccer?

Jim, the Black Hole does produce some unbelievable fans, and while my dad was living out in California he took on the Raiders as his surrogate team. I will be the first to say far too many Yankee fans come predisposed with a great sense of entitlement. This makes it difficult to be a fan since most others want to lump you into that same spoiled category.
Sarah, the Yankees are literally moving right next door into a brand spanking new park.
Andrew, it seems the German’s are fond of Hockey, but certainly Soccer is their first love.

Greg I run into the same thing. Most Raider fans are convinced that the team will win the Super Bowl every year. I however can see how dysfunctional my team has become. While it is fun to generalize based on the loudest of fans , it is also good to remember that not everyone is that bad. As a matter of fact one the guys on my bowling team is a fan of all things New York to include the Yankees.

Now has Al Davis simply lost his mind, or is there a purpose to bringing in new clowns year after year into the franchise?
March 31st, 2008 at 6:10 pm
I would go with option A.
Al has lost his mind. many fans are looking forward to the day that he hands the team over to some one else, most likely his daughter. However I don’t see that happening until he is in the grave.
Ever notice he looks like Brick Top from Snatch?

Hockey is pretty much soccer on ice, just faster and more violent. Basically it was destined to be an awesome sport.

Hockey is awful.
Too bad the game was rained out. I will undoubtedly be watching online during work tomorrow since I can’t get the Yanks in this backwords state that is Pennsyltucky.
At least the Eagles didn’t need to have a courthouse and holding cell in their stadium…makes me proud.

What’s so bad about hockey?

Go to a fight and a hockey game breaks out.

Classic response from someone who hasn’t given the sport a fair shot

I’ve tried. It’s simply not good, much like watching golf. You can’t really see what’s happening.

Sarah I used to go minor league games all the time when I lived in Oklahoma. I even had season tickets for 2 years. I think I have given the sport a fair shot. I loved the fighting that wen on. Part of what drew me to it in the first place. For me hockey is about going to the game. It is hard for me to watch on TV and get into it.

I spent a good 10 years watching loads of hockey, probably about 60 Ranger games a season (I’m sure Sarah is cringing). Unfortunately, the strike really turned me off, and I have yet to make a return to the sport.
Basketball has also greatly lost my interest leaving me to baseball and football.
I will say this, hockey is far easier to watch in High Definition. Plus I did watch the outdoor game this year, and that was pretty cool - not unlike smoking crack.

Greg - You’re one of an unfortunate many that lost interest in the NHL after the lockout. It’s a shame, especially with the likes of Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby in the league now.
I think the Winter Classic did a lot of good, and I hope they continue to do things like that (*gasp* PROMOTE THE SPORT?! What a thought.). Sounds like Yankee Stadium may very well close its doors with Winter Classic, round 2. I could go for that.

Yes, I have been hearing much about the Rangers playing the final game at Yankee Stadium. Many “purists” are up in arms about that this, but I think it would be a great send-off for the stadium - following another World Series victory of course.

Of course.

I have heard that hockey games are a ton of fun to actually go to, however I am with Jay on this one. I can never follow the puck on the ice and I lose interest real easily. Baseball is by far my favorite sport as I am an avid watcher of all teams not just my favorite, which happens to be the Yanks. I mostly credit this to my thorough playing of fantasy baseball where I have attained a lot of knowledge about many players, especially up and coming ones.

If only the NHL could come up with some way to make the puck glow like a colored comet so I could follow it better…
