It’s a Super Smash Brawl
Posted by Greg Molyneux under Gaming
Great games do not come around very often…

Smash, Smash, and more Smash - the formula has been simplified this weekend. Hours have been obliterated, characters unlocked and egos permanently damaged. These are the days of our lives and the mission is simple; absolute completion at the risk of total failure. This rare lever of hyper-focus has led to very late nights and a worn out coffee pot. This game is that good. Returning four player mayhem to all its glory, a Golden Age of Gaming that for too long has been held hostage to posterity. In Brawl, Nintendo has a real gem on its hands, and a worthy successor to the popular series.
Of course the hours of multiplayer smashing with your buddies is still in full effect, only this time Nintendo has altered the playing field. Super Smash now boasts a highly satisfying cooperative story mode (The Subspace Emissary) that harkens back to the side scrolling generation of yore. Oddly enough, there is something inherently nostalgic about assuming the role of various franchise heroes engaged in an epic battle of attrition, against an unknown galactic force straight out of Dr. Who.
A small break in the action has given me the opportunity to babel on about this game. Now I need to dive back into the action, there is work to be done before real work smashes me in the face tomorrow.
Oh, and did I mention this game has lag-free online multiplayer action?
And in the meantime check out Jim’s stream of conscious blog storming meanderings if you want to peer into the inner workings of a mad man.

Greg thanks man. I appreciate it.

Fantastic game! This game has all the characters from Nintendos arsenal along with Sonic to take on Tabuu, the antagonist with the power to destroy planets. It is great to see Mario and Bowser team up as well as Link and Gannondorf. It truly has all the components of a well made game with a little of everything new and old.

I love Smash for Game Cube, so you just got me real psyched to play this game!

Smash on the Cube rocked without question, it occupied much of our college careers. Without question or doubt it is lesser to Brawl in every way.

Is Marth on this game? Cause then I might have to go out and by a Wii.
March 17th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Marth is back, and he has his very own stage.
March 17th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Sure, it was fun. Yeah, there are new characters. New stages, yup, got those too.
But…it really was basically the same exact game as the one for the Cube. Not that that is a bad thing! But seriously, everybody, what the hell? It was the same game.

Although I didn’t play much of the single player game for the cube, the single player mode in this game rivals that of some of the best video games of all time. The story is totally awesome and you see the entire nintendo universe come together. And the addition of Sonic, Snake, Pit, StarWolf make the game that much sweeter.
Best Wii game yet in my opinion.

I can’t speak for the 1-player piece of Brawl, I’ll give you that, but adding a few new characters really doesn’t justify the significant release delays that came with this game. Nintendo was a let down, again.

Remember too, online multiplayer (which is a free service with Nintendo) is also in effect with this game. This is a big difference from the GameCube version as well.

Online multiplayer with this new generation of consoles should be, at least in my opinion, a given. All I am saying is that the release date was delayed how long from the first one to the ultimate release date? And all they had to offer was basically the same game with only a relatively few upgrades/enhancements. The incremental value of the improvements does not offset the increased development time.

In my opinion, the Subspace Emissary makes the $50 bucks worthwhile. Also, as far as I know this game was only delayed one month.

I think it is time to Babelon about the 10 things you hate about Nintendo!

Indeed.

Well done.

I love the game. All I have to say is that the online is far from lag-free. Myself as well as others have experienced this. It is not often, nor severe, but it is an issue.
